Foreword
The electrical connectivity between DSS power sources and power consumers extends the operational capability by allowing interoperability of both DSS power sources and power consumers between different nations DSS. Each signatory nation is responsible for conditioning Level 2 power sources so that the output to the DSS is compatible as defined in the AEP - 95. To this end, Allied Engineering Publication AEP - 95 , linked to STANAG 4695, provides technical directives that NATO nations with a Dismounted Soldier System can adopt.
It is the signatory Nation's responsibility to ensure that the introduction of new equipment designs, both power consumers and power sources, does not hinder the interoperability of their respective new equipment with other Nation’s DSS. It is the signatory Nation’s responsibility to provide interoperability at the level of their choices respecting this STANAG 4695. The levels of interoperability are defined as follows:
Level 1 Interoperability is defined as the basic level of interconnectivity existing for NATO Dismounted Soldier System. Level 1 connectivity allows for a NATO DSS to utilize NATO garrison or vehicle power sources. The requirements for this are detailed in STANAG 4619.
Level 2 Interoperability is defined as a standardized connector installed on the power module to allow for direct exchange of portable power sources among NATO allies (e.g., batteries or other worn power sources).
Level 3 Interoperability is defined as a standardized form factor and connector to allow for interoperability in terms of the ability to exchange both power and C4I data among NATO DDS.
The figure below gives a representation of the different options to electrically connect DSS and DSS components. This drawing shows the functional power connection of the DSS Power Source where “C” denominates a Connector, “D” denominates a "Data" interconnection and “E” denominates an "Energy" interconnection. Subtype “a” denotes the connection between the DSS power sources to the DSS. Subtype “b” denotes the connection between the DSS to the DSS central system (core soldier system/peripherals). Subtype “c” denotes the connection between the DSS to the DSS platform system (i.e. weapons, headborne systems).
