This Allied Publication defines a method for determination of smoke generation for a material, under three sets of specified laboratory conditions. The procedure is based on ISO 5659-2:1994 and as such describes and experimental method for measuring smoke production from specimens of the material, using a single chamber test. This is supplemented to include detailed requirements for specimen preparation for particular types of material, additional details for test and calibration procedures to enhance repeatability and reproducibility and requirements for data presentation, including a formula for the calculation of a Smoke Index (SI) and a measure of the smoke generation by the specimen during the first four minutes (VOF4).
