This is a test method for evaluating the ability of a paint (or paint system) to protect a substrate from corrosion upon exposure to a salt spray or cyclic corrosion* test.

*Cyclic corrosion tests, such as SAE J2334, which use a combination of wet and dry cycles, are required instead of Salt Spray when testing substrates that utilize both paint and a metallic coating,, typically zinc "galvanized" or aluminum "aluminized", for protection against corrosion.
