This specification covers general requirements, identification, inspection, property and performance requirements, quality plan, and source approval and quality control requirements.
Descriptions
This specification covers several categories of material types with several choices within each category. The choices within each category typically vary by hardness and related physical properties but can apply to similar applications. The following base material designations are available:
TPR
This designates a standard thermoplastic rubber material. It usually consists of thermoplastic olefins (TPO) blended with elastomers, although other polymer bases are available. These materials may contain recycled rubber (post-consumer automotive tire) with prior approval. Typical applications include grommets, bumpers, boots, aero effect seals, body seals, sound dampers, closeouts, air ducts, trim components, valence panels and other interior and exterior applications.
TPU
This designates a thermoplastic urethane material suitable for many of the applications listed above and has its own unique properties.
Descriptions – Suffix
The following suffix modifications are available:
H This designates a heat and weather resistant thermoplastic material. Minimal oil resistance is expected for this material.
O This suffix designates a material with good oil and diesel fuel resistance.
C This suffix designates a heat and weather resistant material with resistance to heavy duty diesel coolants. Minimal oil resistance is expected for this material. Typical applications include water seals, air seals, and hoses.
Compound Variations. A lowercase letter may be used at the end of the compound designation, after the tensile strength number to indicate a specific compound.
Designation on Drawings
The drawing designation shall consist of the base type of material – TPR – followed by any suffix requirements – H, O, or C – which is then followed by the durometer specified with an “A” or “D” to designate scale. This is followed by a compound identifier to differentiate compound variations. If desired, the specific base polymer may be identified in the specification as well. For example:
TPR60A-a per MPAPS-6040
This designation identifies a basic elastomer with a durometer of 60 scale A.
TPO per MPAPS-6040 TPR-H70D-a
This designation identifies a TPO compound meeting the heat resistance requirements with a durometer of 70, scale D. This is also a specific compound variation a designated by the “a.”
Polyester per MPAPS-6040 TPR-O55D-b
This is an oil resistant polyester elastomer compound with a durometer of 55, scale D. This compound is designated “b.”
TPR-0020 per MPAPS-6040
An alternate designation, intended primarily for parts still under development that may require material property modifications prior to final production release but after the print geometry has been determined.
APPLICATION
This specification covers thermoplastic rubber compounds used for various truck applications that may or may not contain recycled rubber materials. For thermoset compounds, see MPAPS L-6039.
Restricted Chemical Substances
All product supplied to the requirements of this specification must comply with the requirements of the MPAPS B-50 specification.
