This specification establishes four resistance spot weld classifications and defines the quality requirements for each class. Specific requirements for spot weld nugget/button size, weld spacing, overlap, test and inspection criteria, and repair options for each class of spot weld are detailed in this specification. Engineering will determine the required weld classification and designate the appropriate class by using the International Standard Weld Symbol shown below for that class on the engineering drawing as shown in Figure 1.
APPLICATION
This specification covers the quality requirements for resistance spot welds used in fabricating truck bodies and other truck components made from bare or coated low carbon steel (Grade 1 or Grade 1G per MPAPS A-6, PART I and II), high-strength steel grades (Grade 6 or Grade 6G per MPAPS A-6, PART I and II), stainless steel per MPAPS A-37, and aluminum alloys per MPAPS C-10. The specification is applicable to spot welded assemblies produced in International plants and/or produced by suppliers in supplier facilities and then shipped to International plants.
