The new NFPA 1143 guides communities and agencies toward successful wildland fire management.
Every year, wildland fire incidents in North America pose increasing threats to adjacent communities, often overwhelming the resources of local first responders. The 2009 NFPA 1143: Standard for Wildland Fire Management recognizes the development of the National Fire Plan in the United States and numerous mitigation efforts to solve the problem of ailing forests and endangered communities in or near forested areas.

- Specifies the latest management practices and policies necessary for a fire protection organization to develop a wildland fire management program.
- Incorporates material to help small community and volunteer fire departments prepare for fire suppression in forested and wildland areas, and address the broader task of wildland fire management including mitigation, prevention, and community coordination.
