The joints described in this document are for use on silica optical fibre circuits forming part of a transmission network, point to point link or local area network. The cables to be joined can be of different types but containing silica optical fibres to a common specification with a cladding of 125 μm and a coating of 250 μm. Fusion splices are produced on site using specialised machines and tools, this document describes the test methods and first line mechanical protection devices for these splices. Mechanical splices are procured for assembly on site, this document also details the performance and test requirement for these splices.
