This guidance manual provides general guidance on the examination of earthworks, in accordance with NR/L3/CIV/065. Modules 1 and 2 of this guidance manual provide specific guidance relating to the examination of Soil Cuttings and Embankments.

This guidance manual is intended to be read in conjunction with NR/L3/CIV/065. The manual provides definitions for the parameters to be recorded during an earthwork examination, supported by sketches and example photographs.

Purpose

Earthwork examinations are carried out to check the likelihood of failure of the asset. These examinations are required to confirm the asset failure likelihood and to qualitatively assess its ability to perform its function.

The purpose of this manual is to help to standardise the information recorded by different examiners.
