This document sets out the key principles of, and offers guidance on, track layout specification and design. The recommendations are based upon the cumulative understanding, knowledge and experience of wheel/rail interface issues gained through detailed investigations of poorly performing sites. Seventeen case studies are listed demonstrating solutions to site specific problems, a few of which have led to standard changes
It is intended for initial project specification and for track design for remodelling and renewal work.
This document covers all specification and design for S&C renewals and enhancements works on Network Rail infrastructure. However, the principles are also applicable to maintenance works or part-renewal of S&C for understanding root causes and being able to rectify various modes of failure.
The principles identified and lessons learned are applicable to all railways with turnout performance issues.
Purpose
This guidance note enables better specification and design of S&C, leading to a significant improvement in layout performance, reliability, longevity and safety.
It also forms part of Infrastructure Projects - Track's 'Safe by Design' initiative to
Drive safety by design across the National S&C Programme
Lead the optimal specification for S&C renewals and refurbishment
Evolve design philosophy nationwide and
Drive S&C system reliability.
