The Telecommunications Policy covers all Network Rail telecommunications technologies, systems, end to end Services and safety. The policy aims to provide the direction to enable effective:
a) Telecoms service performance and reliability
b) Workforce and passenger’s safety
c) Network capability based on modern IP technology platforms and architecture
d) Assurance of safety, security and maintainability by design
e) Migration of services from TDM and legacy systems
f) Remote management and security capability
g) Critical Data Platforms and Data Centres
h) Support to a data driven railway
i) Improve asset and system data and management
Railway digitisation is underpinned by telecommunications services which will continue to improve the performance of the networks and systems by:
a) Increasing telecoms service availability targets
b) Providing services via platforms that are highly resilient
c) Building in business continuity as a core requirement
d) Developing disaster recovery plans to mitigate the effect of catastrophic failure
e) Engineering Standard designs and services driving automation
f) Pro-actively managing services
Purpose
The Network Rail Telecommunications Asset Policy provides aconsistent approach to telecommunications on behalf of Network Rail. The policy document provides the direction for renewal strategies and aid the planning process for thefunctions that have a telecommunications requirement.
