Introduction

In conjunction with the development of Network Rail's new codes NR/L2/CIV/072 and NR/L2/CIV/073 for OLE Structure design to the Eurocodes, this document contains worked examples demonstrating the use of the Eurocode for the design of typical OLE structures.

It contains four sets of example design calculations as follows:

i) Single Track Cantilever ("STC") design in Appendix A

ii) Two Track Cantilever ("TTC") design in Appendix B

iii) Portal Structure design in Appendix C

iv) Typical Connection Design in Appendix D

These calculations are aimed at introducing OLE designers to limit-state Eurocode procedures. Whilst every attempt has been made to confirm that the example calculations are as relevant to standard OLE structures as much as possible, it must be appreciated that not every possible application can be envisaged and covered with an example calculation. However, if the calculations are worked through systematically, then it is envisaged that designers will have been introduced to enough of the Eurocode procedures to be able to use their own engineering judgement to correctly apply Eurocodes to the particular scenario in question.
