This procedure applies to earthworks monitoring to better understand potential failure mechanisms or to manage the risk of earthworks failure until an intervention will be carried out.
The scope covers earthworks monitoring:
a) system selection, and the strategy for the mitigation of earthworks where the condition potentially affects the safe operation of the railway;
b) strategy for implementation as part of the earthworks risk control;
c) on new earthworks and earthworks remediation projects.
This document does not apply to the monitoring of track over or adjacent to construction works, this is covered in NR/L2/CIV/177.
Purpose
This document defines the methodology for selecting and implementing a monitoring strategy for mitigating earthworks at risk of failure, or earthwork assets that have failed and are awaiting completion of a permanent solution.
Earthwork monitoring helps to control risks associated with the following loss events:
a) slope failure leading to loss of gauge capability
b) slope failure leading to loss of track support and/or geometry; and
c) slope failure leading to loss of safe environment without loss of gauge capability or track support/geometry.
