This module applies to the assessment of impact to the railway from outside party hydraulic fracturing exploitation to mitigate risks, that may arise from:
a) elevated ground vibration;
b) reactivation of faults;
c) migration of fluid or gases;
d) induced abandoned mine instability.
This assessment will be based on information submitted to Network Rail by the Planning Authority in conjunction with information held by Network Rail. The evaluation will be carried out by Network Rail or its agents.
NOTE: The assessment methodology of (a-d) has been developed in line with research carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and others, commissioned by Network Rail (between 2017-2019).
The following risks is not included within the scope of this standard:
a) Increased traffic over Network Rail’s property;
b) Abnormal loads on Network Rail’s property.
Purpose
The purpose of this module is to enable the identification of potential threats to railway infrastructure from outside party hydraulic fracturing.
The module informs how Network Rail will evaluate and respond to Town and Country planning consultations associated with these operations and manage the risks within the scope of this standard.
