This standard is intended for use by Network Rail staff, contractors or other stakeholders involved in the collection, collation and reporting of Environmental PI data, and in particular PI Data Providers and PI Owners.

This standard applies to all activities and equipment used in support of works carried out by, or on behalf of, Network Rail.

Purpose

Data is an integral part of demonstrating performance, benchmarking and building an appropriate business case for improving performance.

For environmental performance, the identification of data that can demonstrate performance has been pulled together as the Environmental Sustainability Index which is part of the Company's Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Programme. The Environmental Performance Indicators (PIs) that form the Index have been discussed at Corporate Responsibility Group and approved at the Executive Committee. They are centred around the three environmental sustainability goals:

• To achieve sustainable consumption and production;

• To improve energy efficiency and reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in running the railway; and

• To protect natural resources.

This standard describes how data is collected as Environmental Performance Indicators (PIs) and brought together to feed into the Environmental Sustainability Index which is part of the Company's Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Programme.

This standard:

a) Describes the purpose of the KPI and PIs;

b) Defines each indicator;

c) Identifies key responsibilities; and

d) Details how Network Rail's environmental performance data shall be collated, analysed, reviewed and communicated.
