The responsible job role for each standard requirement is given in the RACI in appendix A. Where the text references “Each business unit” the reader should refer to the RACI to determine whose responsibility it is to fulfil this requirement.

Purpose

This business process provides the framework requirements for Network Rail’s business units to implement and maintain an Environment and Social Management System (ESMS), which relates to the management of risks associated with Environment and Social activities.

It enables business units to implement a system aligned with ISO 14001:2015 that covers both Environment and Social requirements in support of Network Rail’s Environment and Social Performance Policy. The intended outcomes of the ESMS are to:

a) enhance environmental and social performance;

b) identify and fulfil all compliance obligations;

c) set and achieve environmental and social objectives.

Furthermore establishing a successful ESMS has other positive impacts on the business, including but not limited to:

a) cost savings;

b) enhanced business reputation;

c) enhanced employee engagement.
