The product requirements in this specification apply to Interfaced Overlay MSL type of level crossing.
This document specifies the product acceptance criteria for the Interfaced Overlay MSL system for use at user worked, footpath and bridleway level crossings.
Purpose
This specification sets out the functional and non-functional requirements for an Interfaced Overlay MSL level crossing controller.
Fitment of an Interfaced Overlay MSL allows active protection to be provided for level crossing users at a lower cost than occurs when the MSL system has to be integrated into the signalling system and where a signal is present in the strike in area of the crossing.
The Interfaced Overlay MSL is designed to be a cost effective and safe level crossing system using red and green light indications. It may be installed at level crossing sites designated as User Worked Crossings, Bridleways and Footpaths on a railway with a maximum of two running tracks, each having trains approaching from either direction.
The product is designed to provide protection to the right of way user by means of red and green lights plus an audible warning. The product has provision to interact with Power Operated Gate Opener equipment or powered barriers.
The equipment is designed to overlay existing signalling infrastructure, interfaced only by connection to a signal (at the lineside) where such a signal exists within the train detection zone of the crossing.
