Purpose

This document forms a part of the Modular Signalling Handbook. It sets out details and pointers to further information on the standard interfaces between the signalling system and other engineering disciplines.

The simple architecture of the approved Modular Signalling systems enables the design of, for example, the telecoms sub systems which support the signalling system to be standardised. This avoids (or at worst minimises) bespoke design and development effort for each application of the systems, contributing to the cost saving which Modular Signalling achieves.

The designs for telecoms, power systems, civil engineering details etc are in general unique to each supplier of a Modular Signalling system and owned by them but common to each application of that system.

Such designs should be approved on a generic basis in accordance with the approval process for that discipline including any options or variables needed to suit, for instance, varying ground conditions and the guidance on how to select and apply the options.

Once such approvals have been achieved the design details will be referenced in this document.

Over provision of facilities – eg a bigger base than is strictly needed or slightly greater battery standby time – is preferable to preparation of a bespoke design as the material and labour saved will be more than offset by the time spent on design and, in particular, gaining approval.
