This standard defines the maintenance and functional testing that Network Rail requires for lineside telephones, and associated connecting tail cables.
It applies to all persons engaged in the maintenance and testing of lineside telephones, and connecting tail cables.
This standard covers the maintenance of telephone instruments installed at Automatic Half Barriers with Plessey (Hixon) PETS units however the units themselves are covered in NR/L2/TEL/30089. Telephones used as part of a Whiteley PETS system are covered in NR/L2/TEL/30080 in their entirety.
Lineside Plug Points and telephones (including SPTs) connected to Tunnel Emergency Communication Systems are covered in NR/L2/TEL/30097. For telephone instruments situated on the operating floor within Operational Buildings see NR/L2/TEL/30083.
Purpose
The purpose of maintaining and testing lineside telecom services is to decrease the incidence of failures through deterioration and to identify potential failures before they become service affecting.
