This document specifies the material, electrical and mechanical properties of the Tunnel Emergency Communication wire required by Network Rail.
Purpose
The Tunnel Emergency Communication (TEC) wire system is generally deployed within tunnels of underground stations to provide a voice communication path between the train drivers and the signalling centre or the Electrical Control Room Operator. In an emergency it can also be used as a mean of tripping the circuit breaker controlling the electrical current to the conductor rail.
The system consists of two parallel TEC wires installed on insulation pots on the walls of tunnels. To use the TEC wire system for communications, the train driver clips a special handset across the parallel TEC wires. With the handset connected to the TEC wires, in an emergency the electrical current to the conductor rail can be switched off by pressing a dedicated button on the handset.
This document details the parameters which TEC wires shall be assessed to demonstrate their suitability to be used on Network Rail's infrastructure.
