This module of NR/L2/TRK/001 covers the following:

a) sidewear;

b) minimum rail depths;

c) gall and corrosion;

d) localised head loss;

e) loss of rail foot width;

f) inspections for rail corrosion and rail depth in level crossings and RRAPs; and

g) use of coated rail and premium steel rail. 

Purpose 

The purpose of this module is to: 

a) reduce the risk of broken rails due to corrosion and rail wear; 

b) reduce the risk of fishplate strike due to rail wear; and 

c) permit the use of train-borne inspections for corrosion and rail wear, reducing reliance on manual inspections.
