Introduction Rail mounted lubricators are required to control the dispensing of grease to the wheel/ rail interface. This is necessary for the following reasons:

• To reduce the rate of wear of rails.

• To reduce the traction coefficient and limit the initiation of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) in particular gauge corner cracking (GCC).

• To help prevent incidence of block joint failure by reducing the risk of metal particle inclusion.

• To reduce the risk of potential derailment due to the combination of dry gauge face/ wheel flanges causing a binding effect

This specification outlines the minimum requirements for the installation, maintenance and recording of lubricators.
