This document specifies the product requirements of supplementary protection by deployment of a SAWD for footpath and bridleway level crossing systems protected by a whistle board.
Purpose
The purpose of this product specification is to define the requirements of a supplementary Audible Warning Device (SAWD) for footpath and bridleway level crossing systems protected by a whistle board.
The product is intended to be a supplementary control to the existing ‘stop, look, listen’ level crossing controls.
The SAWD system is designed to be a cost effective means of reducing the risk to users of footpath and bridleway level crossing by providing them with an audible warning of an approaching train. It will be installed at level crossings designated as bridleways and footpaths, providing they have existing whistle board protection.
NOTE: The product required by Network Rail will be applied as an interim solution whilst a specification is written for a long term solution to provide a warning system that is capable of allowing whistle boards to be removed.
