The scope of this document applies to footbridges, including at stations and other locations.

It includes requirements and guidance for:

a) Prioritising assessments;

b) Determining the scope of assessments (including situations where qualitative assessment applies);

c) Inspections for assessment;

d) Quantitative assessments;

e) Interventions following assessment.

It is for use by everyone managing the load capacity of existing footbridge structures and undertaking structural assessment.

Do not use structural assessment techniques for design unless directed by structures controls for ‘design, construct and commission’ or specifically instructed by a representative of Network Rail.

Where it is not clear whether this document applies to the assessment of a particular structure, seek instruction from the AE.

Purpose

This document provides requirements and advice for the assessment of footbridges. It complements NR/L2/CIV/035. It forms part of the control barrier ‘Carry out Structural Assessment and implement actions’ to prevent the risk of functional failure of the structure.
