Purpose
The Soil Cutting Hazard Index (SCHI) is used to objectively assess and score the level of hazard presented to the railway by a soil cutting.
It is based on observations of surface visible features collected during a systematic examination of the earthworks carried out in line with NR/L2/CIV/065 and includes an element of desk study.
The individual observations are scored and combined with weighting factors to determine an overall SCHI score for each soil cutting. The range of possible SCHI scores is segmented into five categories designated A to E and termed the Earthwork Hazard Category (EHC).
The EHC can be related to the statistical likelihood that the soil cutting may fail.
