Purpose
The Soil Embankment Hazard Index (SEHI) is used to objectively assess and score the level of hazard presented to the railway by an embankment.
It is based on observations of surface visible features collected during a systematic examination of the earthworks carried out in line with NR/L3/CIV/065 and requires an element of desk study.
The individual observations are scored and combined with appropriate weighting factors to determine an overall SEHI score for each embankment.
The range of possible SEHI scores is segmented into five categories, designated A to E, and termed the Earthwork Hazard Category (EHC).
The EHC can be related to the statistical likelihood that the embankment may fail.
