This Network Rail standard specifies the four Key Environmental Performance Indicators and the associated Environmental Performance Measures to be documented, reported and monitored.

These are applicable to all investment projects carried out in NDS, Track Renewals, Asset Management, Network Operations (Maintenance) and those carried out by Infrastructure Projects, including those being managed as an alliance or partnership.

The four Key Environmental Performance Indicators are based upon those environmental aspects deemed significant for construction activities:

1. Environmental Incidents;

2. Materials and Waste Management;

3. Co2 Consumption;

4. Water Consumption.

For the purposes of the this document ‘Key Environmental Performance Indicators' and the associated 'Environmental Performance Measures' used to create the indicators will be collectively referred to as ‘EPI data'.

Purpose

Continual improvement is an integral part of effective environmental management. Environmental Performance Indicators (EPI's) and Environmental Performance Measures are an important tool for monitoring continual improvement.

The purpose of this standard is to identify Key Environmental Performance Indicators and the associated Environmental Performance Measures, specifically selected for investment projects and Infrastructure Projects, which will help to achieve environmental excellence.
