This standard applies to the release of substances to the environment, such as liquid to land or water or gas to air, resulting in or having the potential to cause pollution and which occurs:

a) on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure (NRMI), including Network Rail managed stations;

b) on other than NRMI but which causes, or has the potential to cause, an increase in risk on NRMI;

c) on NRMI and affects adjacent non-Network Rail property;

d) within an office or building that is not part of NRMI but is owned by or leased to Network Rail and is occupied by Network Rail staff;

e) on NRMI and affects a designated or protected site or species.

Note 1 A ‘designated or protected site' includes a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and source protected areas (SPAs).

This standard applies to any of the substances listed in Appendices A and B.

This standard also applies to:

a) Work undertaken without consent on a legally protected site or a site containing a protected species, and

b) Contravention of environmental law (e.g. waste management legislation, fires, noise) by Network Rail or its contractors.

Purpose

To provide a consistent, comprehensive and structured process for the reporting of environmental events to meet the requirements of Railway Group standard GE/RT8047.
