Network Rail
This document applies to all maintenance work carried out by ourselves and our contractors on Network Rail controlled infrastructure, including manned and unmanned buildings and stations.
Purpose
This document sets out the Network Rail procedure for managing asbestos risk during maintenance work. The presence of asbestos-based material does not in itself constitute a danger. However, it is hazardous when disturbed or damaged and must be treated accordingly. Activities which give rise to airborne dust, e.g. breaking, sawing, cutting, drilling or machining asbestos products, are most likely to present risks.
To advise staff and contractors of the requirements and limitations on work with Asbestos based materials on network rail controlled infrastructure. Specifically those whose work may bring them into contact with existing asbestos materials (e.g. electrical or building maintenance staff) will be trained to recognise the possibility of its presence.
