This SMP describes the activities that ensure the correct identification, management and rectification of suspected broken rails. This procedure also establishes the framework for technical and managerial review of rail integrity.

This procedure does not cover:

• Routine track patrolling

• Any form of ultrasonic examination

• Site management (including the establishment of a safe system of working),

• Works planning.

Purpose

This document defines the process to be adopted for the management of broken rails, including the recording of details and trend monitoring.
