This module applies to all Network Rail and contract staff engaged in the maintenance and renewal of Network Rail’s infrastructure. In the event of
unseasonably cold weather occurring during the summer period, refer to NR/L3/OPS/021/03 Winter Management.
Purpose
This module describes the general Network Rail procedures involved in the preparation of the infrastructure for the summer period. Each year Network Rail’s
summer preparations are focused between 1 April and 30 September. The arrangements remain in place after 30 September to deal with any unseasonably hot
weather which may occur in autumn or before the next year’s preparations are finalised the following spring.
This module details the preparations and mitigations managed by Network Rail during the summer period. Its purpose is to:
a) enable Route teams to understand their role in gearing up for the summer period;
b) detail the summer risks which the industry faces;
c) define the management and reporting of Critical Rail Temperatures (CRTs); and
d) summarise the implementation and removal of heat speed process
