This SMP describes the activities which shall be implemented to confirm that the specification of site and rail conditions relating to both aluminothermic and arc welding are accurately defined and communicated effectively. This procedure also establishes the framework for technical and managerial review of weld quality.

This procedure does not cover the physical welding processes as defined in NR/L2/TRK/0032 – Joining of rails by aluminothermic welding and NR/L2/TRK/0132 – Maintenance Arc Welding of Rails, Switches and Crossings

Anyone in this document undertaking welding must have attended and passed a Network Rail approved training course and hold the relevant competency.

Anyone in this document undertaking weld inspection must have attended and passed a Network Rail approved training course and shall hold a valid certificate of competency.

Purpose

This procedure applies to all aluminothermic and arc welding activities. It sets out the arrangements through which Network Rail complies with the minimum requirements for the management of rail welding on the permanent way, and of any consequent actions.
