This Standard Maintenance Procedure (SMP) describes the activities which shall be implemented to ensure that the specification of site and rail conditions relating to rail depth, sidewear and gall are accurately defined and communicated effectively. This procedure also establishes the framework for technical and managerial review of rail integrity.

This procedure applies if you undertake the inspection and monitoring of rail at site specific locations which are in addition to routine track patrolling and inspection.

This procedure does not cover;-

• Routine track patrolling and inspection

• Rail grinding

• Site management (including the establishment of a safe method of working),

• Works planning

• Switches and crossing (SO53 inspections)

Purpose

This document defines the process to be used for the inspection and monitoring rail depth, sidewear and gall.
