This procedure applies to contracts managed by Network Rail, which could introduce risk to the Operational Railway and includes the application of the CDM Regulations to such contracts.

It is to be read in conjunction with, and follows on from, Procedure NR/SP/OHS/00109 "Project Safety and Assurance Requirements", which deals with the safe development and management of projects as a whole, and the HSE Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) "Managing Health and Safety in Construction", HSG224, which shall be the principal source of guidance for the application of the CDM Regulations to Network Rail's works.

It does not apply to contracts which are managed by outside parties but which could introduce risk to the operational railway; these are covered in Network Rail Company Standard RT/LS/P/043.

Purpose

This procedure describes the activities required to ensure the safe management of Network Rail contractors as required by component 8 of Network Rail's Safety Management System.
