The Track Inspection Handbook shall be used by all Track Engineering and Maintenance staff undertaking Patrolling, Supervisory Inspection or Engineer's Inspections of the track assets. Use of the Track Inspection Handbook will provide a consistent baseline against which corrective actions are defined when track asset conditions are inspected.

The details contained are in two distinct forms:-

For safety critical conditions, mandatory actions and timescales are identified.

For asset conditions which could deteriorate because of traffic type or local conditions, timescales for intervention action are identified. The nature of the corrective work to be undertaken in these situations will be defined by, and remain the responsibility of, the Supervisor and Engineer.

Purpose

This Work Instruction Preface introduces version 3 of the Track Inspection Handbook (TIH). The handbook has existed in previous forms but without formal document control and distribution. This is corrected by the issue of this preface.

The Track Inspection Handbook is a compact, easy to use document which reflects the contents of the Technical Specification "Inspection and Maintenance of Permanent Way" (NR/SP/TRK/001). The TIH contains details of the minimum actions and timescales to be applied in the event of sub-standard asset conditions being identified on site.
