Introduction

The derailment at West Sutton on 9th October 2001 was due to gauge spread caused by corrosion and shearing of the lockspike fastenings installed with Pan 8 baseplates on hardwood sleepers.

The failure of the lockspike is difficult to detect as it tends to occur beneath the baseplate. Therefore the following special instructions must be applied to the management of Pan 8 and other lockspiked track.
