This specification applies to all blanketing sand used as filtering layers for use in running lines owned by Railtrack. It applies to dug natural sand from river deposited or wind-blown sand deposits or dredged sands.

It does not apply to crushed rock (stone-dust) from quarries or crushed rock filtering sub-ballast (formation strengthening) layers from quarries.
