This specification applies to all inspection of the track. It sets out:

• mandatory frequencies for routine visual, ultrasonic and geometry recording inspections;

• procedures for carrying out the above inspections;

• details of those track defects which, if found, require immediate blocking of the line to traffic or imposition of an emergency speed restriction;

• methods for detailed inspection of certain major track components.

Unless otherwise stated, the specification applies to all running lines and sidings open to traffic. For the particular requirements at leased depots see RT/CE/S/037 Requirements for maintenance of trackwork in depots by Depot Facility Operators.

The specification applies to track which is undergoing renewal, or is in a temporary condition in connection with underbridge or other works, as well as to track which is in normal maintenance.

PURPOSE

This specification gives the minimum requirements for the inspection of Railtrack's permanent way, and for any consequential actions.
