The enhanced maintenance can be applied to all types of track circuit configurations. For example installations with wood, steel or concrete bearers / sleepers and equipment with relay or Solid State Interlocking control.
Opportunities exist for automatic data capture to help refine the application of maintenance through active condition monitoring devices. The enhanced maintenance specified in this code of practice is considered to be compatible with any such opportunities although no particular condition monitoring devices are specified or recommended.
PURPOSE
This code of practice defines enhanced maintenance requirements for track circuit systems. The aim is to offer the ability to increase system reliability by detecting and correcting deficiencies to the infrastructure related to track circuits before they give rise to failure.
This code of practice is part of a suite of documents which defines default and enhanced maintenance requirements for track circuit systems. It details all infrastructure requirements associated with the reliable operation of the track circuit, treating it as a complete sub-system. This means that the maintenance considers not only the electrical track circuit equipment but also, for example, the permanent way, adjacent block joints, cables, bonding and associated relays, etc. in the adjacent apparatus case, as far as they affect the sub-system.
Each document defines the circumstances associated with implementation and is supported by guidelines on establishing a suitable base equipment condition, fault rectification and specific defined test or maintenance sequences - relating to specific types of track circuit, e.g. T.I. 21.
