This document applies to time switches manufactured by Schlumberger (previously Sangamo) used on audible warning control units at level crossings. It does not address the general personnel and system safety measures necessary for working with signalling equipment.

Purpose

Two separate incidents have occurred relating to the use of Sangamo/Schlumberger time switches used on audible warning control units at level crossings. The first incident highlighted the lack of information currently available to staff regarding the use of these devices. The second incident identified the slow running of a Sangamo time switch due to its internal back-up battery being defective.

This code of practice provides advice on the procedure necessary to:

• identify time switches with defective backup batteries

• obtain replacement audible warning control units

• correctly set up the time switches.
