Introduction
This procedure covers the installation and maintenance of pneumatic tensioning unit in Overhead Line Equipment.
Pneumatic Tensioners are designed to provide reasonably constant tension in overhead line equipment, where it is not practicable for balance weight assemblies to be installed.
The tensioners operate with approved oil and gas. The ratio of gas to oil depends on the tension length and is determined so that the volume of gas expands and contracts to compensate for the increase or decrease in lengths of contact and catenary caused by temperature change.
A tensioner consists of a cylinder from which a ram emerges at one end.
The crosshead connected to the ram is attached to the anchor structure whilst the crosshead connected cylinder is attached to the overhead line equipment.
The charging information is calculated on the basis that at -18°C the cylinder is fully retracted onto the ram.
At lower temperatures, therefore, the equipment becomes effectively "fixed termination".
