This specification applies to all voltage breakdown devices which are connected to electrification fixed equipment in dual a.c. and d.c. electrified areas.

This specification does not address safe working practices when testing, repairing or renewing the equipment.

Purpose

This specification states the requirements for the periodic inspection and testing of voltage breakdown devices (‘spark gaps') in use on electrified lines where d.c. electrification is close to or shares tracks with a.c. electrification.

The voltage breakdown devices electrically separate the structure from the traction return current path during normal conditions, but conduct if there is a rise in voltage.

The document is to be read in conjunction with Railtrack Line specification RT/E/S/21111 and the relevant procurement specification.
