The test applies to spanwire fittings used in headspan construction. A headspan registration assembly using cross spanwire clamps of this design were involved in an accident at King Edward Bridge, Newcastle, on Sunday 21 July 1991.
Measurements of torques typically applied to the fasteners, and failing torque of fasteners are to be measured.
A range of permissible torques will be applied to first one, then both of the fasteners in the assembly.
Predicted sliploads for applied torques will be derived.
A calibrated dial type torque wrench should be used throughout the tests, when taking torque readings, or applying chosen torques to fastenings.
Throughout the tests all components shall be visually inspected before use, any components that are obviously damaged must not be used.
Purpose
This document describes a series of tests to determine the slipload capacity of Cross Spanwire Clamps (Reference 122/22/1) on 19/2.1 Cadmium Copper Spanwire (Reference 148/43/998) and to verify the maximum permissible working load of 8040N.
A drawing of the assembly, 1/122/22/A2 and parts list is in Appendix 'A'.
