Executive Summary
The TPWS Project will be fitting upwards of 50,000 new items of on-track equipment in the shape of transmitter loops within the next few years. Application of current signalling installation practice for on-track equipment would require the use of orange pipe for the tail cables.
Railtrack Asset Management have issued a joint letter between the Head Of Signals Asset Management and the Head Of Track Asset Management stating that "The use of orange piping is no longer considered as being the preferred method for cable protection", offering clipping of cables to the sleeper top as a preferred alternative. This will however create a significantly higher workload for installers in drilling holes in sleepers to accept the cable ‘P' clips, particularly for concrete sleepers.
This Technical Guidance Note provides guidance on the interpretation of the requirements of Railtrack Asset Management for the installation of TPWS Transmitter Loop tail cables.
