Introduction

A centre bound sleeper is one that has voids at both sleeper ends but is bearing hard on the ballast in the centre.

This can lead to the development of a crack or cracks in the middle of the sleeper - in line with the rails - or even lead to the sleeper snapping in the four-foot.

Centre bound sleepers are usually found in elderly track that has carried (or is carrying) large quantities of coal or quarry traffic.

This Track Work Instruction will help you recognise a centre bound sleeper and will help you spot where you are likely to find them.
