Introduction

This Track Work Instruction covers how to manage alignment faults.

Definition: An alignment fault is ‘where there is deformation of the track which does not necessitate any emergency remedial works to a running line under cover of either a temporary speed restriction or a closure of the line’.

The faults considered in this TWI are significant isolated features rather than general poor alignment.

The word buckle is often wrongly used to describe a ‘misalignment’, the term ‘alignment fault’ is used here to describe a track deformation, which does not need emergency remedial work.

N.B. An alignment fault that occurs in sidings or whilst any track is under possession is not regarded as a track buckle. See also separate instructions:
