Introduction

This Track Work Instruction gives an appreciation of the types of railhead defect that can be corrected using on-track rail grinding machines, jig grinders and small hand held rail grinders.

The rail head should be kept in good condition to preserve rail life, avoid damage to train wheels and to provide a consistently good ride.
