Introduction
This Track Work Instruction covers how to produce a plan for the maintenance of the track in a local area.
The plan should be designed to cover an annual period and include all the seasonal work to satisfy engineering requirements. It should also be capable of being rolled forward with minor amendments to continuously cover the twelve months that follow.
Some heavy maintenance, or work involving scarce equipment or difficult possessions, may have planning timescales longer than a year. In such cases it may be necessary to extend the plan to cover a longer period, although not to the same level of detail. In addition, some routine activities, such as level crossing examinations, are required at frequencies that are longer than annual and these will have to be planned accordingly. Local plans also need to be in accordance with route or area strategies.
A plan must be driven by the work needed. There are several different reasons why a plan may change. A good plan is one that identifies the consequences of any financial or logistic restriction. For example: TSRs, Overtime working.
