Introduction
This Track Work Instruction covers how to manage leaf fall and should be read in conjunction with Autumn Preparedness documents. Leaf fall has always been a problem but it is now an increasingly sensitive issue.
In managing leaf fall the key is to know the problem areas and plan to minimise the consequences of leaf fall as and when it happens.
The problem is that leaves, as they are run over by the trains, are squashed and the cellulose in the leaf is effectively glued to the railhead. As this occurs, there is a build up cellulose until it acts as a grease for the train wheels, which affects acceleration and braking. It also acts as an insulator and prevents correct operation of track circuits.
