Introduction
This Track Work Instruction covers the planning and carrying out of transposing rail.
Transposing rail is the changing of rails from one side to the other i.e. each ending up in the location that had previously been occupied by the other.
It is normally carried out on curved track where the high rail has become sideworn, but it could be required on straight track where cyclic sidewear is present.
Before planning transposition of rails, you must make certain that the condition of the sideworn rail meets the specification for serviceable rail.
This limits the re-use to line when line speed is less than 80 mph.
