The impinging jet ventilation (IJV) system has shown promise in improving the indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal stratification of indoor spaces. In addition to investigating the effectiveness of the IJV system on thermal comfort and IAQ, the objective of this study is to develop a simple method to design an optimum IJV system for practical use, something that all the previous studies failed to do. This objective is achieved by investigating the IJV system experimentally and numerically and compare its performance to the traditional overhead air distribution system in terms of thermal comfort and IAQ. The experiment was conducted inside a 3 m x 3 m x 2.9 m room, with the air supplied from an inlet of 15.24 cm x 10.16 cm fixed pointing downward at 42 cm from the ground and the air delivered with high velocity of around 2.8 m/s and a temperature of 19.5ºC. Numerically, the model was tested at different inlet heights ranging from 36 cm to 80 cm from the ground and each height simulated at different velocities ranging from 300 cm/s to 500 cm/s. The findings indicated that a correlation between the height of the inlet and its velocity could be established to design the IJV system for optimal performance.
